A flash of energy ripples at light speed across a mile of southwestern desert. It alerts watchers who have waited for it over half a century, and the race is on to possess the secret to the most powerful force ever created. Vernon Washburn is a retired assassin, now seeking a return to normal life, but success with his lifetime dream is suddenly being torn from his hands, his life is threatened, and the bad guys are making a world dominating move that he alone can stop. Now, two years into living his dream, he is forced back into action. His task; obtain four artifacts he and his Special Forces HALO team brought home from Bosnia. It’s a simple enough mission, but the team members are murdered before he can obtain their items. Even while Washburn hunts the artifacts, he is being hunted by two men; an arch enemy who wants the artifacts and an Interpol detective. The action begins in a Bosnian forest, travels in time and place to Midwestern Minneapolis, and finally to the European Alps. To succeed and stay alive, Washburn must resort to the assassin mentality and combine it with the talents of a magician, or die trying. Sleight of hand and sleight of mind intertwine in an action thriller that blurs the lines between magic and science, good and evil, reality and illusion.

Plotting: not bad. Characterization: so-so (it felt as though most were from central casting for a low-budget made-for-tv movie). Action sequences and descriptive narrative: very good.Misused words? Tons. When it got to be just too much, I'd add another note that the author should be beat about the head and shoulders with a dictionary or some such, then go on to... yet another aggravating misuse of an apostrophe to _attempt_ to indicate a plural. Such things (and there were many others) should be caught by good proofreading, and the author obviously needed someone to do that job for him.
Still, I gave it a three star rating for being a good rough draft first effort. The action sequences and other descriptive narrative pulled it up into three star territory. It's well worth the price of a used paperback (the Kindle price), and I hope Crone's next book (yeh, I'll read it if he'll write it) has some decent proofreading. That'd bump it up another star from me, even with no other improvement.

Camouflage Tom Crone Books Reviews
Another Pronzini Nameless winner Great twists and turns and a surprise ending. in depth look into main characters pschy. If you like Nameless you'll like this
It's hard to believe this is Tom Crone's first novel! Camouflage is a suspenseful, intense, page-turner from the outset, and Vernon Washburn will take his place along side Sandford's Lucas Davenport and Flynn's Mitch Rapp as Minnesota's favorite crime/terrorist fighting fictional heros! Well done Tom, we'll look forward to the next one.
I only hope that Bill Pronzini continues to write books in the "Nameless Detective" series for many more years. Another great story (actually, several story lines that go on simultaneously), and characters about whom I care very much.
The writing was of intrigue and suspense, I enjoyed it through the end. Not one boring page. I can't say more as I do not want to reveal any of the twists and turns and ruin it for other readers. I am hoping Tom Crone writes another book in the same genre so I can read it too!
I have been a fan of the this series for about 20 years. The last book before this one, while decent, just did not do it for me but this one kept me reading in to the wee hours of the night and to top it off there was a bit of humor here and there.
Again same cast of characters (we love) in S.F. detective agency. Here we have two unconnected murder plots (hence 2-4-1); a family situation and a stolen ID scheme. My only criticism is Mr. Pronzoni's over descriptions of unimportant facts and situations (almost like page fillers), but withthat said the pacing is good, a very enjoyable read. I am a real fan of 'Nameless'.
The Nameless Detective is retained to trace a client's first wife in order that he can obtain an annulment from the Catholic Church and marry a rich woman who is devout. At the same time, a Nameless associate, Jake Runyon, is forging a relationship with a stroke victim, whose child has obviously suffered physical abuse while living with his father.
The plotlines do not mesh, for while Bill Pronzini writes about complicated people, and does so especially well with the psychologically damaged, his stories are clear, distinct and satisfying.
Plotting not bad. Characterization so-so (it felt as though most were from central casting for a low-budget made-for-tv movie). Action sequences and descriptive narrative very good.
